Spa Covers & Hot Tub Cover Care Instructions

Spa Cover & Hot Tub Cover Care Guide

A properly cared for spa or hot tub cover can last up to 5 -10 years. Here are some tips on keeping your spa cover in top condition:

  • Clean the Cover Regularly. Using mild soap and water, clean the cover gently and regularly to remove abrasive dirt and dust. at least twice per month. Never use a silicone or alcohol based cleaner; it will void the warranty (e.g. Armor-All). These types of products can deteriorate the vinyl's topcoat, allowing the plasticizer particles to escape. Once this happens, the vinyl will be prone to cracking and discoloration.
  • Maintain proper spa water chemistry. This is not stresses enough. If the spa's water chemistry is more balanced, the vapors emitting from the tub are less corrosive. The less corrosive the vapors are, the longer your cover will last. Failing to maintain proper water chemistry may void your warranty. Don't Over Chlorinate. As the water evaporates the chemicals in the steam can distress the spa cover and accelerate the deterioration of the materials. By making sure that the balance of all needed chemicals is right, you will prolong the life of your cover exponentially. If you are not sure your spa's water is in chemical balance, take a sample to a hot tub or spa dealer and have them analyze it for you.
  • Remove the cover for 30 minutes after shocking your tub's water. When shock is applied to the tub's water it is burning out the Chloramines and Bromamines in the water. During this process highly corrosive vapors are released. Following this tip will protect your covers materials from premature degradation.
  • Completely remove the cover at least once per week to allow the water to drain out. Always completely remove the cover while using your hot tub. We discourage the practice of only opening one half of the cover while bathing in your spa. After time the trapped vapors will work into the foam board. The use of a cover lifter can make taking the cover off during use effortless.
  • Keep the Cover Clear and Free of Debris. After a heavy rain or snow storm, sweep any standing water or snow off the spa cover. An accumulation of snow or puddles of water could bow the cover.
  • Do not splash chemicals on the spa cover. Move the cover completely away from the water when adding chemicals to the spa. This includes chlorine, bromine and herbicides.
  • Handles. When opening the cover use only the handles (do not use the steam-stoppers or tie downs as handles). The handles are designed to be used only for opening and closing the cover. Do not carry the spa cover with the handles. Do not hang, lift, or tug the spa cover by the tie-downs or skirting.
  •  Get a cover lift. For covers that may be too cumbersome or heavy for you to maneuver, we recommend a cover lifter. A cover lifter allows you to lift or tilt the cover up and off the spa with ease.
  • No Heat Producing Objects. Items such as grills, lanterns, torches, etc. should be kept away from the spa cover. Excessive heat will damage the spa cover.
  • Do not leave pool toys lying on top of the cover in the sun. They act like a magnifier and will melt the foam board to the shape of the toy thereby providing a place for water to puddle while also making the foam board weaker.
  • Don't Stand on the Cover. Do not walk, jump or play on the spa cover. It is wise for your safety and the condition of the cover, not to do so. Most covers are designed to insulate from heat loss and to keep debris and dirt out of the tub. You cannot walk on a standard insulating spa cover. We do offer special spa covers that can withstand up to 500 lbs. weight
  • Puddles. If you see water standing on your cover, find the zipper and carefully unzip that side, remove the foam core, immediately flip it over and replace it into the vinyl. Zip it up and the puddle should disappear.
  • Get a Winterizer. This is a cover for your cover with an elongated flap that goes over your cover and provides protection from the elements.
  • Report any warranty issues immediately.

These tips are common-sense and easy to follow.
By following these tips your spa cover will provide years of enjoyment for your family.
